Brideshead Revisited 30 Day Challenge

penrose-stairs:

I’ve reread Brideshead Revisited every spring and summer for a few years now and this year, I’ve decided to create a 30 day challenge for myself starting June 1st. You are welcome to do this as well.
(You can tell I’m from UChicago by how some of these are so obviously Scav Hunt-inspired. I am now tempted to create a Brideshead Revisited scavenger hunt list.)
Note: This is mostly for keeping myself sane. A necessary distraction for finals week, or something to that effect. If you get annoyed with my posts, please block the tag Brideshead Revisited 30 Day Challenge with Tumblr Savior. Thank you.

This is the most exciting thing I have ever seen!

I’m going to do this as soon as I go home for the summer ^_^.

But I was in search of love in those days, and I went full of curiousity and the faint, unrecognized apprehension that here, at last, I should find that low door in the wall, which others, I knew, had found before me, which opened on an enclosed and enchanted garden, which was somewhere, not overlooked by any window, in the heart of that grey city.

A happy anecdote.

I went down to the chaplaincy with Tegan today to revise, and we bumped into another friend there, a history student who was also revising.

It came up in conversation that he’s going to Castle Howard with some friends, and he asked whether I’d ever seen Brideshead Revisited. By this point I was grinning and Tegan was looking at me knowingly. You all know how obsessed I am ;). I explained this, and so he invited me along :D. We proceeded to talk animatedly about the wonders of the series, the horrors of the film, and the magic of Jeremy Irons’ voice.

I am quite ecstatic. I know some incredible people!

I have been here before,” I said; I had been there before; first with Sebastian more than twenty years ago on a cloudless day in June, when the ditches were creamy with meadowsweet and the air heavy with all the scents of summer; it was a day of peculiar splendor, and though I had been there so often, in so many moods, it was to that first visit that my heart returned on this, my latest.

So accurate.

This was my conversion to the Baroque. Here under that high and insolent dome, under those coffered ceilings; here, as I passed through those arches and broken pediments to the pillared shade beyond and sat, hour by hour, before the fountain, probing its shadows, tracing its lingering echoes, rejoicing in all its clustered feats of daring and invention, I felt a whole new system of nerves alive within me, as though the water that spurted and bubbled among its stones, was indeed a life-giving spring.
